First Impression Friday: NARS Soft Matte Complete Foundation
Happy Friday, jury!
Welcome to the first ever: First Impressions Friday! Today we will be trying out the NARS Soft Matte Complete Foundation. I have been super excited to test this product because of the great things I've been hearing about it.
A well-known tiktoker, @mikaylanogueira, mentioned this product in one of her videos, and she hasn't let me down yet with her recommendations.
PACKAGING
The unicarton is the usual NARS box. It's matte black with the NARS logo down the side. All of their products come in the same packaging, which I like, because it makes it look sleek and coherent on the shelf.
The foundation bottle itself is unique to the NARS collection. I have tried every. single. NARS foundation they've come out with, and I haven't seen a bottle like this. It is a squeeze bottle with a twist-off cap. I can appreciate this design, because it doesn't need a pump. A lot of the other foundations by NARS require a pump but you have to purchase the pump separately.
I like the overall look of the foundation and think the packaging is practical. I'd say it's also good for travel, since the lid can't just pop off.
PRODUCT
The foundation is VERY liquidy. Like if you were to apply it to the back of your hand, it would run off the sides very easily and very quickly.
There are 34 shades in this foundation and I have the shade Medium 3.5 Vanuatu. When swatching the foundation on the back of my hand, it looks a shade or so too light, but when applied on my face it's a dead-on match to my neck and body.
The NARS Soft Matte Complete Foundation comes with 1.5 fl oz of product, which is more than normal. Most foundations come with only 1 fl oz. Since it comes with more product, it can help justify the price - which we will get into a little later.
NARS claims that this foundation will last for 16 hours, is oxidization-resistant, transfer-proof, dermatologist tested, and non-comedogenic - which are some awfully bold claims.
PRICE
This foundation retails for $40, which is an average price for prestige foundations. This is a little cheaper than other NARS foundations, so that is a nice little bonus. The best test to see if a product is worth the money is if I wear it often enough and would buy it again. Since this is just a first impressions look at this, I would need more time to determine that.
VERDICT
(☆☆☆)
I would say this foundation is average. There are definitely other foundations on the market that are cheaper, and that I like more. For example, the BareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream that I reviewed earlier this week. It's linked here for those of you who missed it.
I have normal skin and this is just a tad too matte for my liking. It's described as a "soft matte" finish, but it dries down to a flat matte, which could be good for oily skin.
I didn't wear it for the 16 hours that it claimed to last, but it start cracking around the creases of my nose only 2 hours in. At the checkin that was 5 hours in, there was no significant change, but it did transfer onto my mask. That is a way for me to know that this would not look that great come 16 hours later. I could also feel it on my skin all day, so even though it's a liquidy formula, it does feel cakey and heavy.
I don't really see this becoming a foundation I will use again, so I will be returning it.
